The Vasilicos, Santorini, Greece

For families

True to its legacy as a family house, The Vasilicos is one of the few hotels on Santorini that doesn’t have an adults-only policy. It’s perfect for parents who don’t want to dumb down their holidays just because they have kids. Sheer drops, cliff-hanging pools, and a clientele who value peace and quiet mean this is definitely not a place for boisterous toddlers or dive-bombing teens. But if you have well-behaved children, who appreciate elegance and beauty, this is just the ticket.

Eco effort

Santorini’s vernacular architecture is bio-climatic by design: moulded into the volcanic rock, suites are naturally cool during the summer and warm during the winter. A traditional system of vents and airways keeps interiors ventilated and humidity-free. Silent ceiling fans are available in most rooms, so air-conditioning is rarely necessary. Jugs of filtered water are replenished daily in every suite. The island’s lack of infrastructure, inaccessible landscape and shortage of water present serious challenges for sustainability efforts. Both Santorini and The Vasilicos are taking steps to go plastic-free.

Accessibility

Santorini is not an island for anyone with mobility issues (or a fear of heights). But unlike most caldera-view hotels, The Vasilicos has private parking opposite the entrance, and the suites and restaurants on the upper levels are accessible via just a few gentle stairs.

Anything left to mention?

Opening in summer 2022, Pink Sophia Maria (christened by Daphne and Makis’ daughter) is a mellow deli-kafenio just behind The Vasilicos. It’s designed for slow mornings sipping iced coffee beneath a shady pergola, and long, lingering evenings sharing a carafe of tsipouro and modern Greek meze.
